SR550 - Better Graphics with R

Description:

R is a powerful and widely used tool for statistical analyses, data visualization and analysis of high-throughput methods like microarray experiments. Researchers who require analysis tools more advanced than Microsoft Excel will appreciate the flexibility and wide range of pre-packaged solutions that R offers. This course will demonstrate several methods to customize graphics in R with personalized colors, labels, fonts, axes, legends and layouts.

This Bioinformatics course is presented by the NIAID OCICB Bioinformatics and Computational Biosciences Branch (BCBB). For questions about the course or for collaboration on Bioinformatics problems, email BCBB at ScienceApps@niaid.nih.gov.

Objectives:

Students will learn:
  • Review of some R basics
    • Installing packages and source scripts
    • Importing and exporting data
  • Simple graphics and customizations
    • Pie charts with custom colors and labels
    • Overlapping histograms in transparent colors
  • Multi-step graphics and customizations with figure legends
    • Bar charts with stacked or interleaved bars
    • Scatter plots with multiple colors, symbols and regression lines
  • Multi-panel layouts and output formats
    • Using the par() command for layouts
    • Choosing an image format
