CS370 - Introduction to ISPF for Wylbur Users

Description:

ISPF/PDF (Interactive Systems Productivity Facility/Program Development Facility) is IBM's system full-screen editor and applications manager. This course will provide a basic overview of how ISPF and associated dataset manipulation features are performed within an ISPF environment during daily use.

Wylbur Conversion: *** Since Wylbur will no longer be available after December 31, 2009 ***, a group of dataset manipulation utilities and processes that convert Wylbur datasets into various non-Wylbur formats that can be easily read/manipulated within non-Wylbur environments like ISPF will be taught. Additional information about CIT resources and personnel positioned to assist with your Wylbur conversion needs will be shared.

In addition, students will be introduced to the basic functions of QWS3270 Secure (This software is a 3270-emulation application that allows PCs/Laptops to connect to SSL-enabled MVS applications over a secure TCP/IP connection. QWS3270 Secure is designed to take full advantage of the "point and click" capabilities of Windows (NT, 2000, XP, and Vista). CIT has purchased licenses, so that NIH staff and contractors who are registered Titan users will be able to obtain this client free of charge for conducting official government business.) Other secure 3270 emulation applications will be discussed.

IOF: (Input/Output Facility for controlling and examining batch jobs and their output)

IBM's MVS/QuickRef (QW): a tool that can be utilized to lookup online system message definitions and any suggested responses/solutions

Objectives:

Upon course completion, the student should be able to:
  • Learn how to invoke the utilities, and tools that convert Wylbur dataset formats to other formats that can be easily manipulated by ISPF, and how to access the CIT personnel available to assist with your Wylbur conversion needs
  • Perform the basic steps to access ISPF using QWS3270 Secure and other like secure products
  • Understand the ISPF commands interfaces, tools, resources
  • Allocate, browse, edit and delete datasets using both primary and line commands
  • Understand how execute a job and review the associated output
  • Understand help functions and basic error handling techniques
  • Understand the functionality of basic ISPF dataset utilities
  • Understand how to read, manipulate and print job output via IOF (Input/Output Facility)
  • Use MVS/QuickRef (QW) to look up various informational and error messages
